I got my start in this business around 14 or 15 years old. A neighbor of mine noticed I had a knack for drafting in school and hired me the next summer to run blueprints and scrub drawings. That neighbor was Walt Carrier, and he mentored me in everything from board/CAD drafting to shop/erection standards and field verification. Walt and the field experience I gained were also instrumental in my understanding of construction in general. Always supportive, Walt let me use the office and equipment while I went to night school to get my BS in Architecture from Lawrence Technological University.
After graduating from LTU I took a job doing CAD based curtain wall detailing at Bruce Wall Systems outside of Atlanta. The projects were large and all over the globe The lure of shiny glass and aluminum couldn't keep me away from steel though, so I struck out on my own, picking up multiple customers in the Atlanta area.
In DATE I decided to move to the Denver area to when I was offered a job to start a detailing department for Consolidated Steel Services. We had a great crew, transitioned from board to CAD by building libraries of blocks and custom LISP routines, and developed a company detailing manual for use with out of house detailing firms.
